Q: What is gasoline?

Gasoline is a nonrenewable fuel made from crude oil. After crude oil is removed from the ground, it is transported to a refinery to be separated into different, useable petroleum products. One barrel of crude oil can produce about 20 gallons of finished motor gasoline. Gasoline is used in most United States’ passenger vehicles with internal combustion engines. Q: What is meant by Octane?

Octane is a flammable liquid hydrocarbon found in petroleum. It is used as a standard to measure the anti-knock performance of gasoline in motor vehicle engines. Grades of gasoline reflect the different octane ratings. The owner’s manual for a car will indicate what grade of gasoline it needs. Source: U.S. Department of Energy

Q: What is meant by Cetane? (refers to diesel)

Cetane refers to one of the most important characteristics of diesel fuel, its ability to autoignite. The higher the cetane number or index, the more quickly the fuel ignites. Typically, United States’ petroleum diesel has a cetane index in the low 40s. Source: U.S. Department of Energy

Q: Can I tell which country the gasoline at my local station comes from?

There are many steps involved in the shipment of gasoline to a local station. First, the oil (whether imported or domestic) is transported to a refinery, then it is moved to a refinery or pipeline storage. From there, the gasoline may travel through a common pipeline or a tanker/barge to get to bulk terminals where tanker trucks then deliver to a gas station. Oftentimes, gasoline from different refineries is combined for shipment by pipeline, thus making it difficult to determine the exact origin of a gallon of gasoline in a consumer’s car. Also, the source of crude oil used at the refineries may vary on a day-to-day basis. Most refiners use a mix of crude oils from various foreign and domestic sources. Q: What contributes to the retail price of gasoline?

The cost to produce and deliver gasoline to consumers includes the cost of crude oil to refiners, refinery processing costs, marketing and distribution costs, and finally the retail station costs and taxes. The prices paid by consumers at the pump reflect these costs, as well as the profits (and sometimes losses) of refiners, marketers, distributors, and retail station owners. Federal, State, and local taxes are a large component of the retail price of gasoline. In December 2006 when the average retail price was $2.31/gallon, taxes accounted for 20% of the cost of a gallon of gasoline. The crude oil price made up 58% of the retail price of gasoline while the refining costs and the refiner’s profits made up 13%. Finally, the distribution, marketing and retail dealer costs and profits combined made up 9% of the cost of a gallon of gasoline. Source: U.S. Department of Energy
